Durham St. Bridge (Walkerton)

Bruce County is planning to replace or rehabilitate the bridge which spans the Saugeen River along Bruce Road 4 in the community of Walkerton, Ontario. Recent inspections of the structure have identified deterioration with a number of bridge components. The County is considering alternatives associated with the bridge design as well as detour alternatives to allow traffic to detour during the bridge construction.

Notice

The Durham Street Bridge sits on Bruce Road 4 at the east end of the town of Walkerton and spans the River Saugeen. Given that Bruce Road 4 between Walkerton and Hanover is Bruce County's highest traffic route, this bridge is considered a critical asset to the County. Should this bridge be out of commission the shortest available detour is approximately 6 km long.

This bridge is a 67 meter long, 5 span concrete t-beam girder bridge with sidewalks on both sides.

The Durham Street Bridge in Walkerton was constructed in 1937 meaning it has been in place for 85 years. According to the current bridge code the service life for a bridge in Canada is 75 years so this structure is overdue for replacement or rehabilitation.

Environmental Assessment (EA) work commenced in 2021 and will take place for a total of 4 years with completion of EA in 2024. Public Consultation will take place in fall 2022. Bridge construction is currently scheduled for 2024/25.
