“Getting snowed-in is a very real possibility during a severe winter storm. Get your home winter-ready to ensure it is a safe place to be for a potential prolonged period of time,” says Bruce County Emergency Management Coordinator Ray Lux.

  • Trim branches hanging over your house so they don’t cause damage if they get weighed down with snow and ice.
  • Shut off your outdoor water or insulate your outdoor pipes to prevent freezing.
  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are in good working order.
  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned to ensure it’s not a fire hazard.
  • Clear your furnace exterior ventilation in the event of significant snow fall and drifting to prevent carbon monoxide build up.
  • If using a generator, ensure it has proper ventilation.
  • Do not use BBQs or stoves as a heat source.
