Travel Smart This Winter: Pack Your Emergency Kits

Travel smart this winter season by preparing an emergency kit for your vehicle.

Winter weather is here, and Bruce County reminds residents to prepare for winter storms by keeping emergency kits in both your home and vehicle.

“Preparation doesn’t stop at home. It’s just as important when you’re on the road,” says Ray Lux, Bruce County’s emergency management coordinator. “First responders may face delays due to high call volumes or severe conditions. Make sure you can keep yourself and your family safe and warm until help arrives.”

Motorists should carry a vehicle emergency kit with essentials to stay comfortable and safe if stranded by road closures or while waiting for assistance. Recommended items include:

  • Blanket and warm clothing (hats, gloves, scarf)
  • Snacks and water
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Whistle
  • Cell phone charger
  • Portable snow shovel and ice scraper
  • Basic first aid supplies

Additional Helpful Items:

  • Booster cables
  • High-visibility vest
  • Reflective safety triangle
  • Tow rope

Before heading out, even for short trips, dress for the weather or bring winter gear with you. If you prefer not to wear a heavy jacket or boots while you drive, pack them in your vehicle. Having them on hand can make a big difference in an emergency.

You can purchase ready-made vehicle emergency kits at local stores or online or build your own.
