Bruce County Reminds Residents: "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"

With summer in full swing and Bruce County buzzing with outdoor fun, we encourage everyone to stay alert to changing weather conditions. Thunderstorm season is here. Don’t let a summer storm catch you off guard.

Lightning strikes remain a leading cause of weather-related deaths in Canada, with outdoor recreation enthusiasts and workers at highest risk. Most strikes occur in open areas or under trees.

Key Safety Tips:

• The safest place to be during a thunderstorm is inside.
• Get inside immediately when you hear thunder. Lightning is within striking distance.
• Stay away from windows and seek interior rooms or basements during storms.
• Don't run water. Lightning can travel through plumbing.
• Avoid small shelters like picnic pavilions. You need to be in a fully enclosed space, like a building or a vehicle.
• If caught outside, crouch low with feet together in a low-lying area (don't lie down).

“We want everyone to enjoy Bruce County’s outdoor experiences safely," says Ray Lux, Bruce County’s emergency management coordinator. “Stay informed by monitoring weather alerts and take shelter when storms are in the forecast.”

Most thunderstorms last under an hour, but proper precautions during that time can save lives.
