Bruce County Council Highlights for January 22, 2026
Bruce County Council met on Thursday, January 22nd, 2026. The complete agenda and video of the meeting is available on our Agendas and Minutes webpage.
These are some of the meeting highlights:
Delegation – Ontario Power Generation
Representatives made a presentation to Council on behalf of Ontario Power Generation, giving a review of the nuclear sustainability services at the Western Waste Management Facility.
The presentation featured the organization’s 2025 highlights, license renewal timeline, Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) commitments and commitments to the environment and community.
Council took the opportunity to discuss with OPG their ongoing and future commitments to working with Indigenous Nations, which will also influence their response to new nuclear developments and their approach to low- and intermediate- fuel. OPG confirmed that new projects built outside of Bruce County will not import waste for storage to the local facility. There is an expectation that new builds include planning for their own waste.
Strategic Community Initiatives Fund
Council received a report detailing the development of a Strategic Community Initiatives Fund (SCIF). The Human Services staff is following granting process guidelines that will open an annual call for community-based initiatives to apply for funding.
The applicant’s initiatives will ideally support investments and expand capacity in addressing service gaps and/or unmet needs of low-income residents across the region. A release with more information detailing when the SCIF is open for applications is coming soon.
See our Human Services webpage for more information on programming.
Federal Rural Action Plan Comments Submission
The Government of Canada’s Rural Action Plan Consultation seeks to gather input regarding their federal programs and to build upon their 2019 Rural Economic Development Strategy.
Council received a report detailing three consultation questions and the suggested responses from Bruce County staff which align with a variety of the organization’s key priorities.
Council discussed the federal approach to child care, fair funding models, and the importance of mobile coverage in rural communities. Council directed staff to submit comments with amendments to reflect these discussion points to the federal Rural Action Plan Consultation.
