Burial and Cremation Assistance
If a loved one passes away and their estate cannot cover the end-of-life expenses, the Next of Kin may apply for assistance with the cost of burial or a direct cremation.
Please note, there is no coverage for the cost of a funeral, visitation or celebration of life ceremony. The deceased must have been a resident of Bruce County at the time of death to be eligible.
How do I apply?
Contact Bruce County Human Services to apply for assistance before signing any agreements or contracts with a service provider.
To determine eligibility, the financial situation of the deceased person and his/her spouse at the time of death will be considered through a review of income and assets.
The following information must be provided for the deceased:
- Bank account information
- Income source(s)
- Asset and investment details
- Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Birth certificate
- A copy of the will
- Executor name and contact information
Burial or cremation costs cannot be covered if:
- The deceased has a life insurance policy
- The deceased owns a property or a home
- The deceased’s estate has sufficient assets to cover the costs of direct burial or cremation such as funds in their bank accounts, RRSP's or other investments; if there is a surviving spouse, their assets will be reviewed
- Service contract has been signed with a funeral or cremation provider
- Burial or cremation has already taken place
The County of Bruce will seek reimbursement for costs from all available source including the CPP Death Benefit. Proof of Death Certificates will only be issued to the Next of Kin after reimbursements have been sought.
