A recently approved Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Bruce County and the Town of Saugeen Shores to enhance the County’s Municipal Housing Allowance program and offer assistance to residents. Saugeen Shores has committed $75,000 to be utilized over the next year to deliver the Saugeen Shores Municipal Housing Allowance under the County’s program. This enhancement will assist an additional 10 eligible households in Saugeen Shores.

The Municipal Housing Allowance program, initiated in September of 2022, addresses affordability for low-income households residing in rental units in Bruce County. The program currently provides a portable housing allowance of $590/month to 27 households in the County. Eligible applicants are taken from Bruce County’s Community Housing Registry. The Program is intended to expand the support offered through the County's Rent Subsidy Programs to additional households.

The addition of Saugeen Shores’ subsidy completes a Major Initiative outlined in the Town’s 2023 Business Plan for its Development Services department. In the plan, the Town has committed to supporting a diversity of housing to meet the community’s needs.

“Both the Town and the County recognize the need to facilitate housing for lower income families” said Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “This MOU moves us closer to our goal of ensuring everyone in our community has a place to live. On behalf of Town Council, I thank the County for helping to further that goal.”

“Strong community partnerships are key to removing barriers and creating opportunities, and the additional support provided by the Town of Saugeen Shores will help individuals and families enhance their level of participation and quality of life in our communities,” said Bruce County Warden Chris Peabody.
